SCA mudrealm gorget specs...

Post by Otto »

I was thinking that for my heavy fighting gorget, that I'd rather use a padded collar.
(cotton shell, couple layers of batting, made in a yoke/collar setup)

Seems like it might be more comfortable and make armour upkeep easier... but is it midrealm legal? I never really did like the feel of blue foam against my skin! Thinking of going that way with the helm too.

Yea, I'm not a marshal, but I remember the rule being hard over soft. If you are using something as hard as or harder than sole leather on the outside and some sort of padding on the inside you'll be fine on the gorget. I suggest trying it there first and then copying a patern for a period arming coif for your helmet.

If your helmet does not cover your neck when you move your head front to back, or side to side, then you will need to cover your proposed gorget with a minimum of heavy leather (~9oz) for it to be legal. Check with your local marshal. I looked at the midrealm's marshalate page, but I didn't feel like waiting that long for it to load.

The gorget should be fine -hard over soft is the rule. But unless there has been a major change in the rules somewhere that I missed, the helmet must have at least a 1/4 closed cell foam everywhere the helmet may touch your head. However you could put your batting idea on top of the blue foam.

(^_^)

The gorget is 16 gauge stainless of the "tried and true" design on my webpage... the designs been around for who knows how long, I've had it for well over a decade. I'm going to have an aventail (nice one with dagged edges made by our own POD, good quality 16 ga. stainless)

I think it most likely that I will have a single layer of blue foam inside the helm... but past that was thinking of a padded coif for the rest. Anyone currently using that method?

Oh, you didn't mention the 16g in the first post. That will work fine. My gorget is lined with leather, no foam at all. I am making cloth pockets to hold foam for many of my armour pieces. I'll get around to my helm one day.

Man, it must be raining a LOT there in the MIDrealm. Image But Seriosly, I don't like slimy foam, not to mention the ugly colors, so I cut out a stiched covers for the foam from a old pair of black levi's and glued them into place over the inner plates.
