The "Deluxe Newbie Tool Kit" was used to dish and shape the pieces, in addition of a drill and a ball pein hammer.
Not to mention the center punch, tape measure and dividers.
The quest for tools is never ending.

About how much time did it take to build it?

About 2 weeks.... Not counting the design time.... But then again there are those that are a lot faster and better than me.
Your millage may vary... Depends mostly on the relevant finish you are willing to give.

The finished piece looks exceptional! Damn skippy! You produce these and there will be little excuse to look terrible on the field. The grill looks great, so much better than round bar sports equipment.

Did you follow along on the combat progress thread?
It shows step by step pics of how I did it, and the tools used.
Some tools used:
Newbie tin/lead dish and dishing hammer
Newbie planishing hammer
Roper Whitney hole punch and drill
Newbie armouring stakes
Ball pein hammer
Plastic hammer
Small cheap 15# anvil to rivet on
Center punch
Dividers
Tape measure
Hole deburr tool
Right angle grinder
Sharpies
Beer
Band aids


I do not know if you can do it.... It takes some fire in the belly as Dr. H. would say.
One will never learn until he trys. Ask Cat how hard it is, she is putting a dress helm kit together.

Hal, How long do you think it would take you to put one of these together now that you have the design down?

If I took a cut kit and was to dish, shape and assemble it with bolts, about 28 hours. I know a lot of folks are faster but they do not have 58 year old hands and arms.

The finishing and color takes me about 16 hours. Now we can add some chiseled bronze trim to the formula and really jack up the time.

The riveting takes only 5 hours as that is my most fun part.

Ya can't have all 3 cheap, fast and good....

I try to have a quality product that one can be proud to own.

This is my finished Norman spangen dress helm kit:
It is opened to it's largest size of 9.25" front to back and 8" side to side.
Caveat: Much smaller sizes will require Wiss Snips rated at 18ga. steel.

This flat kit with rivets, your pre sized and rolled bands is only $48.99 shipping is included in the lower US.

On my final test helm show above I used 1/8" rivets.
I think this is a better size for a newbie to be drilling and peening.

I should offer the option on rivets?

Halberds, wonderful! That'd be a gorgeous newbie helm!

I do have one concern... and I really don't want to rain on the parade... and I really hope I'm wrong cuz that's a spiffy helm.

It looks a little flat through the nose. Wouldn't that be a problem area on an SCA helm? Maybe it's the camera angle and I'm just not seeing it correctly.?

When I put this helm on with no padding and place my forehead against the inside brow band My nose does not touch the grill. Any padding will only move it out further.

The beauty of this kit is, one can hammer the nose out as far as they want.
The grill has plenty of space for the rivets.

This russeted helm is only my interpretation of the kit.
I doubt any two people will make it the same.

Wonderful helm, and I like the grill design... a nice alternative to the normal "bars" thing.
