beginner projects
What would be a piece for a beginner such as myself to start with? Also what are the bare minimum tools I'd need to do this project?

Well, a Coat of Plates is easy. You need Steel, canvas, access to a sewing machine, a punch or drill, a ball peen hammer, rivets (either roofing nails or copper rivets), an end nipper (for clipping off the rivets), something to cut the steel with (shears, tinsnips, hack saw, jig saw), and a file to smooth out the edges. I'll be posting pictures of my new CoP soon (if I manage to find a digital camera), along with instructions on how I made it. Hope this helps.

I recommend making a set of spaulders from Sinric's pattern. They are easy and include dishing, leather articulation, and rivets.
I made my first set using a jigsaw, large ballpeen hammer, stump with a dish carved in it. I used leather from an old set of boots and roofing nails for rivets.
Keep in mind that using the bare minimum of tools the results may not be beautiful but it will give you a good feel for what you can do with metal.
