Rust Prev. Treatments/Finishes for Scales?

I got a nice big batch of mild steel scales recently and used a few to fill the gap on the back of my new maille standard that I hastily prepared for Pennsic. Although I oiled the maille I must have neglected the scales because they have started to brown and freckle with rust.
This is not a big deal for the standard. I can easily replace the scales or dismount them to polish them, but it begs the question---what do I do as a precaution for a suit of scales? It is not practical to polish the scales after they have been mounted to an entire coat and the rust will surely hide where one cannot get to.
I would be very interested in PLUM BROWINING the whole lot. Would this be a sufficient protection against (uncontrolled) rust? Is there a cheaper way to achieve this than by buying the small bottles of Plum Browning solution that are sold for finishing the barrels of black powder musket kits? Or, is there some other alternative to effectively thwart rust (on such an armour?
Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts and suggestions!
Cheers,
Tim
