Leaf thing on romans heads

Hello, I have been making bronze and steel welded floral sculptures as of late. The leaves reminded me of thoes Roman thingies, vines or somthing on the old statues.
Does one have a link to some pics of that?
I think they would be easier to make than bouquets, and more historical too. Is their any need out their for these? I would like to make at least one.
Thank you for your support. Hal.

Those are the crowns from the original olympic games, aren't they?

They are laurel leaves. I don't know which species of laurel, and that's important if you want to be authentic: there are new world laurels that are in no way related to the laurel that they used for those wreath crowns, other than by name.

They kinda look like a tighter grouped leafy section of a wild bay-laurel twig. bay laurel grows wild down in East Texas and Louisiana and probably several other states.
It's kind of a neat wood too. It starts to turn canary yellow after curing for several months (6-8).

Seems I remeber hearing on one of the Histroy channel programs that they were indeed bay leaves. Seems the scent of the laurel wreath was an important part of the award. Then again my memory is a bit shoddy.

No, that's correct. Laurel leaves are bay leaves - the ones you use in cooking (yum!) I've got photos of Byzantine acanthus patterns (a different leaf - grows on a vine) from my visits to the Queen of Cities, but no laurel leaves. Try some sites on things Roman. I looked on Google under "laurel wreath roman" and got
http://www.lawrence.edu/dept/art/buerger/catalogue/060.html and
http://www.gilliscoins.com/coinage/roman_republican_silver/pic_wrrs4266.htmA bit vague in detail, but I'm sure you can find others with a little work.
