Dimensions are approx. 4.5" wide, one will be about 3" tall the other around 6" tall.
I can't tell untill I actually cut the beggars off the pipes, but I think the insides are as nicely formed. I expect heavy pitting if the rest of the pipe is any indication.

Loks like a mushroom stake to me.

I would build it by not being too inclined to chop off the dome. Maybe just as far as the threads.

I would SOLIDLY weld (that means consider a cross brace as well) a stake out of it. Then I would weld a steel plate across the bottom of the cavatiy, leaving one small gap. Then I would fill the body with lead.

Not only will it reduce the dentability of the dome, it will give it much more mass and let you work less hard (except to lift it to the stake plate). It will also cut down the noise a lot.

If you have a large metal lathe then you can try and weld the bar in so that it is really in the centre. Then spin the dome and grind and polish it using the lathe. This is one of the uses of my monster lathe from hell.

Okay...I've changed my mind. This could make the perfect forming tool for armoured codpieces (size; small). Possibly also good for the helmet on an armoured garden gnome.
Actually, better yet, Make the armoured garden gnome and then wear it as a codpiece (size; medium)!

Well although you FIRST idea was excellent, I had already planned on that. Instead I was going to fill it with sand, no nasty fumes whilst welding the base on, and I got sand for free . Alas I have no monster lathe from hell... It'll be a gift, so I'll leave beautifying to the recipient.

Gundo has already (icq) suggested cutting one vertically for a bazuband form, but I'm not sure if I'll sacrafice the remaining one for such a purpose... Personally they're a lot early for my tastes and from the wrong damn continent.

Cod pieces hmmmm , Gnome helms, nah. Please feel to continue to contribute ideas.

hey dont be afraid of the lead.

melt it with a propane heater in a cast iron skillet from a thrift store. make sure you render the skillet unusable afterward.

you will need a strong fan and a canister mask but its worth it. I have my hammering machine base filled with over 75lbs of lead and it killed the ringing. well worth the effort. the added mass also stopped it from climbing uphill in my old shop.

Exactly 4.5" across 5/16" sidewall. Tall one is approx 4.5" tall and more bullet shaped, Short one is 3" tall and round. So I have some 1/2" plate to weld on as a base and to keep the filler in, still leaning towards sand, like I said, it's free. If someone whom I will see on Saturday has his heart set on a square stake, he had better get a length.... Otherwise I have round bar, solid or tubing, ranging from 5/8" up to 1.5" . I think you like 14" as a length?

That someone will be getting the appropriate length of square stock and some additional cutting wheels. I fully expect a review of my cooking skills.

I would weld a wide collar in the middle of the stake. 14" is no good if it's all below the stake plate. Even if you're using a vice, the collar will keep it from falling to the side.
