I've put together my air planishing hammer (mostly like Gundo's) and I have to say it planishes great, when it works... After having my planishing bit's welds break a couple of times, though, I've remembered somebody posting here that complete bits were availiable in the industry, and even posted a link to a website...

Anybody remember any of this?

I hope somebody still has that link...

I want an air planisher BAD. I just finished plainishing a churbourg 13 breastplate by hand. Not to mention the time it'll save me on other stuff.

Anyway what size of a compressor did you use?

What hammer did you use?

Did any of it come from princess auto?

Yep Matt, it's made from the cheapo power fist pneumatic hammer from princess auto I got it for like 10$ on one of their usual sales. I welded a frame from 1/8" thick 1.5" square tubing, and placed a hitch ball (chopped off and rewelded on the side)as the anvil.

From the printed stats, it says that it'll consume 4 cfm at 90 psi so you'd need a 4-5 hp compressor to run it continuously.

I usually planish only at 40-60 psi so you could probably get away with a 2-3 hp compressor, they usually run about 200-300 CDN new.

I'm lucky on that side, the shop is in a friend's basement, and he happens to have a honking big compressor (2000-3000 CDN's worth) so I haven't run out of air.

I'll post pics as soon as I remember to bring my digicam over there, I've been meaning to do that for a while but I keep forgetting.

Needless to say I don't ever want to ahnd planish again!

do you mount the gun on a frame or what??

today i tried dishing whit a air hammer...but the weld broke after 10 minute,but seemed to go pretty good for dishing too

i would see picture of you or Gundo's if possible

If your welds are breaking you may want to try brazing w/ Ni rod instead. I've repaired several forms for a friends press as well as shafts on stakes this way and they've held up much better than those that were welded.
