a great and easy helm would be a simple great helm. there easy and the sides aren't dished but slightly curved. there are some patterns on the archives patterns section. I took a little more difficult challenge my first project last year and made a (ugly yet a start) breastplate from a simple pattern that someone gave me. but i think a great helm would be an easy project!! the only thing you might have a problem with is the top.

A coat of plates is another good starter project. I'd personally use a cavas coat instead of leather (I'm cheap). It is a big piece that gives a feeling of accomplishment and helps build armoring skills, but isn't going to be screwed up if you just follow the directions.
I prefer types other than the Wisby type 1. Just for variety. So many folks in the SCA use the same coat pattern (it is a very good armor), when several other patterns exist in the archaeological record (that are just as good).
For smaller stuff, try dishing a set of elbows. Or make vambraces or pauldrons.
I really like the basic patterns in Paul Blackwell's armoring manual. Look at
www.brighthelm.com (I think that's right) for a large pdf file. Good beginner armoring instructions. I'd be pleased if more folks would make stuff like he shows.

I recommend Sinric's spaulder apttern as a perfect beginner's project. You get to try dishing and leather articulation.

Would a simple gorget be fairly easy to construct? Ive seen some of the patterns and they dont seem too hard, only a bit of riveting and dishing

Well im not one to say whats easy to make, for i havent made anything yet, but a simple pair of splaulers would be the eayest thing to make. All it needs is 1 football shaped plate flightly domed to fit your shoulde, and 3 or 4 v shaped plates curved to fit you arm rivet the suckers to gether and ad a strap. And boom theres a spalder. It should be 18 gauge steel. this iis what im going to make asoon as im dont getting my tools, but thats what just me.

May I recommend the following article:
