Leather for CoP

Wondering if anyone can give me an idea of what thickness of leather I'll need for a CoP? I'm making it with plastic (HDPE 1/8") and it will be worn under a rivetted maille hauberk. It may be closer to what I think is known as a Jack of Plates...with the plastic sandwiched between the leather. Anyone have a decent pattern for something like this?

Um... I wouldn't use leather. If it's going underneath maille, and visibility isn't that big an issue, then I'd use canvas. It's cheap, it's washable, and it's durable.

I've used a wisby type I made with 3-4oz leather and steel plate for almost two years now and it's held up fine. The rivets are 3/16" flat heads, some with 9/16" O.D. washers and some with out the washers ( this was a test) and none of the rivets have pulled through.

On another note: I believe that the COP would normally be worn over the hauberk.

Use canvas for the pre CoP kit. Otherwise you will bake in the hot sun. The Canvas CoP can be cleaned with a pressure sprayer and left in the sun to dry.
Leather will just get hot and the sweat will just soak you through. From a leatherworkers point of view mind you.

I have used 5 oz. leather for my CoP. I agree that canvas would be easier to clean and a little cooler, but I prefer leather. Since is seems you are putting it under a hauberk, I would probably use canvas.

If you can't use finese, then make a mess.

Where would you get "canvas"? And are we talking the tent-type stuff?

best type to use for that is 10 oz un bleached sunforger canvas but not waterproofed. Ask at your local tent and awning maker for some roll ends. You can get it there. Be sure to pipe all the edges so that it does not fray.
or let me know and I can put you in touch with a fabric wholesaler who sells it by the yard. You will need a two yards of the 60" wide stuff for your CoP.
