Side draft forge questions?

Ok I just saw a set of plans for a side draft forge. Looks a lot easier to make then a bottom draft. What's the difference in how it works though?

Will it be practical for me to use to play around with trying to make tools and things?

Also will it work to make one from a brake drum and just put a solid bottom in it?
