if I were to make fingers for gauntlets, what would be the thinnest mild steel you'd reccomend for the job?

16 gauge...anything less, IMO, is not enough...
I make full fingered gauntlets out of 16g mild...tested 18g mild and I dented the metacarpal with a fairly decent blow and slightly damaged a finger lame.

I've done 18G on the bell, you NEED to roll the edge and be pepared to re-shape it every so often and inspect it each time you fight looking for dents near the wrist bones.
If you are going to give/sell/trade it to somone else, use 16G.

Actually I'm making the fingers out of metal and the reast out of leather. I'm gonna try and make the tips of the fingers touch the haft of the weapon and see where it goes from there. I've not done a lot witn metal so I might just be wasting my time. But I got it to waste, so why not

My finger gauntlets are 1050 hardened and tempered carbon steel 18 gauge.
