Dunno for sure.... I play strictly sowrd and shield for now, though I itend to build a pollaxe very soon.
It isn't the area covered by metal that concerns me. These areas have a nice rigidness to them and the finger leathers/felt padding provide a very safe covering in my view. I can say that the fleshy underside of the thumb feels a little exposed, even though I haven't been hit there yet. I feel very comfortable with them sword and shield, I'll post my further thoughts on it once I try pollaxe. I am probably getting a pair of gaunts from Ken Zicker that are more optimized for SCA combat. Then I'd keep these for living history.
