WARNING!!! Possible Arador hack-attempt

Archivers --

One of the members here got a popup window on his PC, saying something to the effect of
we are having problems with hackers at the Arador site, please type in your user name and password

Because he didn't and doesn't visit Arador, and he was visiting the Archive (and had some problems remembering his password here) he was wondering whether we had a popup and had the wrong name, or a legacy name, or something.

We do not. While I have no problems with Arador, nor its editors or policies, the Archive is not associated with Arador, nor are we a spinoff from their site. We don't have any messages that would talk about an "Arador" login. I'm also somewhere between quite confident, and certain, that the phpBB system would not pop up a message to the effect that there have been hacking attempts.

<s>If you get a similar popup, you should assume that your PC is infected with spyware and/or a virus.</s>

I find this interesting because the Arador Forums are not online again after the hack a few months back...

why would someone be after usernames for it if it is not operational? *shrug*

I believe this is because some people link to images on the Arador site. One thread had a picture that showed up as the red X, and when I right-clicked to click 'show picture' it popped up the login window.

Could be that last one (linked image)... I didn't even think about that possibility.

Well, that would make it a lot less sinister and evil, at least.

Arador is back up. I visited the site today. Seems like the old hacker is at it again?

Arador never went down, only the discussion board. I just went over there and the board is still down. I got a message from Eric that it'll be back quite soon, though.

That was the case. Stacy Elliot sent me an e-mail last night w/ the (or one of them, at least) thread which had the problem. I looked at it, got the same popup login, and found the IMG-tag that was for Arador. I replaced it with the plain old URL to the image, and put in an "edited by JT" note explaining what I did.

That thread, at least, no longer generates a login popup.
