One of our newbie fighters is going Viking and has seem some of Wombat's face helms so he's been asking about me beeing able to do one now and then.

Right now I'm in the midst of a zunari kabuto but I may attempt a face helm for him after that.

I showed him the hairy helm and nearly had to scrape him off the walls. He's thinking more of a painted metal face with red hair woven pulled back and woven into a plait to cover the rear slats.

That Red Hair helm sounds cool, Thomas.
It could be woven into a Celtic knot.

This is the progress pic so far..... It's starting to take shape. No?

Perhaps some personality can be hammered into this helm yet.....

I had to use screws to assemble it this far...
It was supposed to be TIG welded but I don't know how yet.

More pics Saturday.....

Nice work, Hal!
Hark the moaning gulls around him,
Hark their shuddering calls of terror
At his fearful fighting pæan.

Oh... thanks... all I can call me self is a metal pounder.

The trick... is to not go so fast... allow the metal to go with the flow.
Your hammering should produce a noticeable effect on the work piece.
Go with the flow...when that happens.... Move the metal in the direction you want it to go. This should produce the desired results.

The first time I saw that... it killed my flow. The very sight of it flowing.... interrupted the process....
Takes a little time getting used to I must say....

This is Gorps Helm pic so far:

The helm top is coming along as planed. Need a lot of more work on the back slats to look more like hair.
I am thinking of polished heat blue for the hair. I like the highlights and reflections in that... Black chrome is very cool.

One never knows until it is finished.... does one?

Progress 12 pic.

Post by Halberds »

Well.... I would like to thank the photo shop guys for the design help.
This is prog 12. Pic.

It is clear taped together as I start to lay out the rest of the rivet holes.
It will be bolted together before it goes to the welder.

Hal

Ps: Acetone burns cuts on your fingers...... but it sure gets rid of the sharpie marks.....
I had a visitor tonight... a big black tranchula... It came in... walked around then went back out the door. I asked him if this helm should be "Sir Fredric" or something and the tranchula did not say anything.... Therefor; it is still Gorp.
I was shooting for Oden, or something Norse.... God like....

Woops..... I lost the bottom teeth....

This is looking great, Halberds, a truly unique style. Reminds me of some of helms of antiquity with the flowing beard and cheeks. It is conveying agression well, like Ugo's face helm conveys contemp for humanity. Wonderful, I can not wait to see the finish, truly one of your most inspirational. Great work!
Prost!

Thanks Sirs,

This is the pic of the back so far. I used the slat back design.

My welder man is out on vacation for 2 weeks... so I started bolting it together.
It is fluted with a modified raising hammer and a common RR spike.
Struck all from the outside over the RR stake to raise the lines.

Sir Mord,

Yes I put in a little eastern touch with the scalloped bands, glad you noticed.
I always wanted to do a top like that but never had the chance.
It sure makes fitting the bands easer.

Seeing how this is fantasy and the sky is the limit. ;-)
I am also going to add a nice removable horse tail plume to the top.....
That should add to the fantasy. After all... it is my fantasy and their are no rules. Yes?

Hi Hew,

I slid this helm to the back burner, as I am currently making 2 LH spangens, and my clients come before my fun helm.

Thanks for the bump... I'll be sure to post pics as soon as I get more done.

Hal, it looks great so far, like always! I took these pics a few years back, they're some Tolkien inspired helms made by someone that is a member of the archive, but his name I couldn't say. I love the helms, despite the crabby pics. Can't wait to see your final product!

Fantasy Helm

Post by Laz »

Hal,

You see, I keep telling you how great you do on armour and why you are one of my armouring inspirations. If it wasn't for the fact that I couldn't really ever afford one of your helms, and you weren't taking commissions as far as I knew, I would have had you do a helm for me.

It would have been awsome to have a helm from one of my idols.

Awww shucks Lodinn, you make me want to dig it back out of the pile and work some more on it now. Thanks for the shot in the arm. I still need to finish the LH helms first though.

Thanks for the pics Azommin, cool helms. I like to see how they represented the hair, that helps.

This is some "how to" on the nose, by far the hardest piece for me.

http://home.armourarchive.org/members/h ... rpnose.jpg
http://home.armourarchive.org/members/h ... epound.jpg

The nose pattern was shaped with kitchen tin foil over the nose on my face, to get the rough look. Then it was drawn around with a sharpie. I cut the nose out of the tinfoil and spread it out flat. Then I added about 1/4" all the way around for trimming. I then cut the pattern out with my plasma torch. The shaping was done in the tin/lead alloy block and over small ball stakes and RR spikes. I used a small tinsmith chasing hammer to planish out the lumps.

I hope this will hold you over a bit until I can get back to work on this project....

Ok, so not only do you make GORGEOUS helms, but NOW you have a plasma torch??

That's it - You're adopting me. I'll have my people send the paperwork to your people. :)

Yes my child... I spent the evening cutting things out with the Miller plasma torch and reattaching them with the Miller TIG...

I even used the stick option to make ears on the new dishing dough nut.
A couple of holes on the drill press.... botta boom... it was attached to the work bench.... The first time I ever, used a dishing tool that did not bounce around on my bench. I like it....

The dishing dough nut with the flange mounting ears is my best invention yet....

My new toys are so far beyond me... I feel like a newbie....
I welded copper, brass, bronze, steel and aluminum tonight.
