Coat of Plates-SCA combat

Post by hjalmr »

What is a good leather thickness for a coat of plates? Is suede better then leather?

I plan on wearing chainmaille under the coat so I was thinking on going with 18g steel with 6oz suede. Would this last in SCA combat?

Any recommendations?

As for the leather, I am not sure of the exact weight but the leather I used for mine is I believe between 6-8oz. (Think biker jacket type leather) and ti has held up very well. Mine is also 18ga plates, the only time I have had issues is with the vertical plates on the side, a good spear shot or great sword can bend them in some, but they are easy to get back to shape.
Hope it helps.
Good luck.

Angus.

I'll bet you can't say that with my sword in your mouth.

My old cop I used 5 oz suede. Never had a problem with it ripping or anything.

However I used the two piece pop rivits on it. So I'd replace 2 or three of those every once in a while. Rather have to replace the rivits than the leather.
