I don't really mind the planishing too much. Hammering it from the inside and planishing from the outside seems to work pretty well for getting a nice round shape, plus I like the fact that the piece is getting work hardened as I do this. I'm hoping it makes for a stronger boss.
Dishing it hot would be faster. I really need to practice with that more. I just REALLY suck at holding things with tongs. I hate it! By the time I'm done fiddling with it to get a good hold, it's already cooled off so much that it needs to go back in the fire. I suppose practice would help with that though.

Hey Cat Just make sure you don't undercut me on price.
I think I set a new record for myself this weekend. I dished out and planished (ok my girlfriend planished them) 31 bosses. 16 were pointy (requires raising after dishing and then planishing) 14 were round and one was round 14ga ss.
My whole body feels like rubber. My brother and I are working on a press setup. Should be deeper then my hammered ones same price will still offer hammered because I know people like em.
Oops hijacking the thread. Your second boss is looking really nice.

Don't worry - I don't think I will be undercutting your price.
(You're not charging enough!) Besides, it takes me a few days to make ONE. I don't think I will ever be able to mass produce these on the scale that you have been able to achieve. I'm not strong enough to hammer for hours on end, so I end up having to take lots of breaks. I think I will offer these as kind of a custom thing. Made to size, maybe offer the different flange styles, etc.

Cat, you could definitely find some customers that do viking, anglosaxon and norman LH who are looking for bosses that match period sizes but won't collapse under rebated steel combat.
Personaly I hate pounding out bosses but I've done about a half dozen and everytime I need to make one I dread the chore.
I'd happily send you some steel for a number of bosses in exchange for a finished one

Yes, I'm hoping these will go over well with the LH crowd. I've been wanting to make something that was LH quality, but I didn't realize it would be these.
I just made the first one because I'm making a shield.
As for trading a finished one for steel - I would gladly do it but the cost of shipping the steel would probably make it prohibitive.
