I find the similarities between this WWI helmet and a visored medieval helmet pretty interesting

Yes, it does bear quite a resemblence. As a matter of fact, the US helmets and others were modeled after historical helmets. Germans used the sallet, and the Brits used the kettle hat.. Our helmets were made by armourers in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC!. For details look for "Helmets and Body Armor in Modern Warfare" by Bashford Dean. My copy (326 of 1000 #'d copies) has the WWII supplement. The one on Ebay is actually American Model, Number 8. The Dunand is very similar (and is French), but has a perforated visor with offset oblong holes.
