I am working on a shirt out of 16g. 1/4 ID stainless, but what else did the scotts have, (other than william wallace) I am not really looking at a spacific time and I don't do any SCA fighting...

Hike your hem up a little farther -- a few inches make all the difference. Aim for the very top of your kneecap. The secret to making a belted plaid snappy is to show off your knees.
Highlander young bucks were known to shorten their plaids to mid thigh or so [edit: make that or higher] to attract the attention of the maidens with a great display of leg. Straitlaced Englishmen of the time spoke with disapproval of the effects of a sudden breeze. Nothing very specific has been recorded of the maids' sentiments. There is an etching about it...
You won't actually need very much help on armor, because about the only Highlanders who had any even in the belted plaid period (latest sixteenth at the very earliest on through the seventeenth) were the chieftains, who might have managed a burgonet and breast and back. Imported. Before firearms became prevalent enough, some of these guys sported cotuns -- an updating of quilted jackets first recorded from the fourteenth century, on the Iona slabs.
