anyone in virginia?

Post by tynant »

Hi! I have been making maille for a while now, and I would like to get into making plate armour. If there is anyone in my local area who would like to get together and talk armour, and maybe give me a few tips on getting started (I have no tools and only a general idea of how to start) I would greatly appreciate your time! Thanks....

Greetings!
I was going to start a new thread about this (and will if I steal this one completely). I'm currently building a shop in the Barony of Black Diamond. The shop is going to be open to people to use for woodworking, metalworking, and leatherworking. I'll be teaching blacksmithing and armouring workshops once it gets going, and there are other people who will also help out teaching things. We already have the space and a lot of the tools. What we need now are people to help set up the building. We're almost done with the wiring, but not quite, and soon we'll be putting in floors. The shop is located in shawsville, about 20 min. from VA Tech. If anyone can help out, please let me know. Recently the workdays have been on tuesday nights and weekends depending on schedules.

To answer your question more directly, yes, I'm in VA, currently in Blacksburg. I also have connections to a number of blacksmiths in northern VA and know some in other parts as well. Check out my website to see some of the things I've made. I'm fairly new at this too, but I have a few years experience with a variety of things.

Jacob

I'm in VA as well. Barony of Blackdiamond, Canton of Azuremont...yadda yadda, mundanely known as Rocky Mount (near Roanoke).

Jacob, I could probably lend a hand with construction, parents depending. However just drop me a line about some construction dates and I'd be willing to lend a hand.

The building is already built. I just need help pushing some wires through a conduit and a few more outlets attached and the electrical end is done. Mostly what I need now is some manual labor soon to get the flooring in on 2 sides of the building (the center is going to be a garage to drive into, and pull out when we're working).

If anyone can help in the next few weeks, or maybe a couple months depending on how much help I get on the floors, let me know. I'll be that much more willing to help you with your own projects if you help me get set up. Image

I hope to get the wiring done this weekend. We'll start on floors once the electrical inspection is over.

benalishlancer: if you're on the baronial listserv, I sent notices out regularly.

tynant: If you're interested in blacksmithing, maybe Vlad can get you some names of friends near richmond. Blacksmithing is how I started, but admittedly there are some big differences (for example, I dont think I could charge more for textured armour, but I've spent hours beating hammer marks into otherwise smooth blacksmithing projects). It is nice to be able to make your own tools, though.

Muhaha, Black Diamond taking over
Jacob, did you see my other post about the ugly helm? I want you to get a pic of the "Helm of Ish" and post it, preferably with someone wearing it. Maybe Magda. If it wins donate the prize to the Barony.

Again guys, sorry. But I'm at work and don't have my email access for this.

Edric,

I'ld be happy to help anyway I can. I've been studying bladesmithing, but would be happy to provide any help that I can. E-mail me.

I'm in Woodbridge, which is a fair bit closer ( North on 95 about 90 min, depending on where you are).

However, it sounds like Jacob has a lot more in control than I do right now. I can barely find time to finish building my stake bench, let alone welding together the stakes.

Still, if you're interested in hanging out and banging on stuff, email me.

(Vlad and Jacob, you guys are welcome up here too, ya know... I don't have the shop yet, but I do have a beer fridge...)

Just completed a Great Helm, I just need to blue it and put the horse tail on the top. Pounding on a gorget, Finished some spaulders that need bluing and strapping. I found a great place for steel in Petersburg if you are interested. I just got torches, a forge, and new anvil to work hot. Plan on firing up the forge this weekend.

Will be starting a Sallet next week

My shop has the following, HF shear, vice, bench grinder, angle grinder, shop press, buffer wheels, anvils, dishing and raising cylenders, oxy/acy torch, forge with blower, ect.. Just now really getting into plate since I finished all but one leather and chain commisions

I'm thinking of going out to work some more on the armoury this weekend. The things we need to do now include:

finishing touches with the wiring (one more switch, 2 more outdoor lights to hook up, do something with the screw that broke off while putting in a light switch [frickin plastic box...], and attach wires in fuse box (hopefully a local electrician will be there))

Hanging doors: two of the doors in the shop opened inwards. Now that they're off, they need to be rehung to the outside.

sorting wood and pulling nails: we have lots of used lumber for the flooring, we need to find what we want and pull out the nails.

Bonfire: the wood that's no good and other junk will go up in flames! come join the fun!

Let me know if you're interested in helping out. I can get you directions and we can work out times. Also let me know if you're interested in using the armoury once it's set up or helping in the future. I like to think I'm doing this for other people too.
