New Leather "Muscled" Greaves

Post by Gerhard von Liebau »

Hello people of the AA,

I just strapped a set of greaves I made. They are made of 11-13 oz. saddle skirting, but sadly taken from a thinner part of the leather than my usual stuff (which tends to run 12-15 oz.) Still sturdy, but not as sturdy. They were formed over my calves and heated in the oven after taking shape (not on my calves!). I took some time to do little things like flare the edges and roll the back edges in enough to get a "closed" feel to them. They're quite form fitting and I wore them around without the straps with ease. Just couldn't do much more than trot, because of physics and all...

They were dyed black, and have been sitting around for a while. I had some funky, hinged knees on them, hence the top rivet on each, which is now in fact useless. I took them off because I came to the conclusion that although they were well-hardened, they would loosen up after being played in for a while and be deemed unsturdy for combat quickly.

I used Fiebings "yellow" leather dye on the straps, and that looks more like a golden brown, really. Oh, well. Better than nothing! The straps are connected by a single rivet in the center of the greave. Anyway, not a lot to describe.

The main greaves were sealed with leather protector, but the straps were not.

Thanks, and cheers!

I've been thinking of making a pair myself. Can you post pictures with the knees?

When I get home after school today I'll post some pictures with the knees. While I had the knees on I did not have the straps on yet, so you can't quite see it "all" together. Lol, but, you'll get to see how my knees worked...

(EDIT: Uh, oh... It seems as though the pictures with the knees attached are no longer on my computer. Sorry about that. Anyway, what I did was take a strap and rivet the knee at the center on the inside, over the top of the greave on the inside, where the rivet it showing through. This allowed for some good flexibility.)
