I just strapped a set of greaves I made. They are made of 11-13 oz. saddle skirting, but sadly taken from a thinner part of the leather than my usual stuff (which tends to run 12-15 oz.) Still sturdy, but not as sturdy. They were formed over my calves and heated in the oven after taking shape (not on my calves!). I took some time to do little things like flare the edges and roll the back edges in enough to get a "closed" feel to them. They're quite form fitting and I wore them around without the straps with ease. Just couldn't do much more than trot, because of physics and all...
They were dyed black, and have been sitting around for a while. I had some funky, hinged knees on them, hence the top rivet on each, which is now in fact useless. I took them off because I came to the conclusion that although they were well-hardened, they would loosen up after being played in for a while and be deemed unsturdy for combat quickly.
I used Fiebings "yellow" leather dye on the straps, and that looks more like a golden brown, really. Oh, well. Better than nothing! The straps are connected by a single rivet in the center of the greave. Anyway, not a lot to describe.
The main greaves were sealed with leather protector, but the straps were not.
Thanks, and cheers!
