Hmmmnn...

Generic would be a rectangular sheet of maille.

It's connecting it to the helmet that the fun comes in.

Connected directly?

Attached to a piece of leather?

Do the vervelles (if used)line up correctly?

Is it the correct diameter for the helmet?

You can always have a large sheet ready for customizing once you have the helmet type and size.

You can use this Bishop's Mantle pattern from Bladeturner:

Easy enough.

It does need to taper like the bishop's mantle. A relatively generic one can be built - it is sort of a cone of mail. You can make it expand by joining triangles or with the 'extra' rings like the sited page shows. I personally did it with the extra rings.

Make the small end larger than you think it should be - when it fits a helmet closely it pulls in at the neck and looks silly. Make it long enough to go over the shoulders.

Most of the aventails coming out if India are relatively generic, so you can do it too.
