I have a pair of bascinet halves from Cet, I am trying to get the point into its proper location. Which is proving to be a bear. After wailing away at one of the halves for a couple of hours its about where it should be but the tip is still curved in.

How are you guys doing it?

So you would like to flare the edge out slightly if I am reading you right.

I would first try the edge of my dishing stump to flare against, but if the wood proves too soft, move to your anvil and flare it slightly there. If you have an edge that is slightly rounded that should help reduce the marks to the outside of your helm halves.

What Aaron had me do for my bascinet (now probably gonna be a cervellie) was put the bascinet point on the tip of the horn of the anvil. give it a good whack to set it on the horn.- this acts a s almost a fulcrum point so you can move the rest of the bascinet around the horn without having to reposition the point.

then hit the edge near the face opening a few good times. then do the same for the back just rotats the bascinet- wherever you are hitting it is facing up towards you. it really does a good job in just a few good hits.

Sorry if I'm not explaining this right or confusing. :? I'll ask Aaron if I see him on wednesday to just tell me how to do it again so I can write it out better for you.

Thats how I got the majority of the metal to move, using the horn of the anvil. Guess I need a heavier hammer, the dead blow I have is not quite up to the task.
