Hi Members,

I slipped and smacked my shoulder good and well, on the sidewalk this icy winter.
So I have not been very active of late: however I was showing this tool I made last summer to a member and thought to my self...

The newbie welders could do this.
I used to use this steel weight in the vice but everything was too short.
So this is how to make this tool.



1. Wally-world disk weight this is the 2.5 pound grey painted steel round one with the hole in the center.
2. Cut it in thirds.
3. Weld it to a steel pipe fitting.
4. Grind, sand and polish the working radius.
5. Attach this to a black iron sch.80 pipe and flange pedestal.

I know the heavy metal blacksmith guys would frown on this; however it works for me and the newbies.
YMMV.

Hey Hal what would you use it for I can't really think of anything. Always good to have more stakes though.

Also aren't those weights cast? Did you use a nickel rod? If so you might want to add that.

Hi Matt,

I used it for the humps on the Roman Ridge helm.
The rolled looking ridge around the brow band and the ridge on the front to back band.

I also use it on the Norman Conical spangen helms to raise the center front to back band.
Use the Eastwood door hammer... re-ground smooth... works great.

I think it would also make nice flutes in the panels; however I have not tried that yet.... Coming soon...

I have one SCA Spangen Helm in the work order que... it was granted full artistic leave... and I could take my own sweet time.
So.... I can try this out on this trade helm... As I have a hankering to do it.

I sort of got hooked on the ST. Justina Helm (sp) The top fluted style is well represented in the miniatures.

Ps: The round flat weights seem to be ductal cast. They weld very well with the steel MIG wire. I think they are made in Taiwan with imported US scrap metal. It is a blend of everything... no ASME specs....

There is a huge difference between Cast IRON and cast STEEL. Cast steel welds like whatever steel it was made of. This means that you can generaly weld it just like mild steel.
