Trying to motto my shield

Post by Murdock »

Well i knwo what i wanna put on it

I got a stencil and wrote it in pencil

then tried to ink it in Sharpie

It looked like reheated shit.

Soooooo anyone have a good way to do the lettering???

My current idea is to masking tape the edge and stencil the letters on it then cut the tape out with an exacto knife and paint it. That will probly take the rest of the day.

NOOOoooooowwww i'm thinking that wahile the raw hide was damp i shoulld have embossed it with my letter kit and then fillied it it with sharpie. On the regular raw hide it painted fine....then water proofed it with clear tool dip.

I may do that on the other one thats not painted yet.

A sharpie will not work. Go to walmart or a hobby store and get the actual paint markers. They do not bleed.

What font did you use? Old English Text?

Use a simpler font, Vinque or Beckett are a couple of nice caligrific fonts that are not as complicated as Old English Text.

You could do a tooled leather border all the way around. wouldn't be too difficult. you could also cut letters out of leather and rubber cement/glue them on. the latter way I think would look cool, especially if you did it in a contrasting color.

I like the paint pens idea.

Paint (at least some paint) is period, and you can be done tomorrow.

I have not motto'ed my shield yet, but what I do when I paint shields and such is use carbon paper or make my own carbon paper by rubbing a pencil on the back of the paper. That will give you the direct transer of the design. There are several free fonts available at fonts.com that come close to what we have all seen in the Mac Bible and other illuminated manuscripts.

Once the design is transferred, the rest is the person painting. I use acrylic craft paint (like Folk art) from AC Moores or Michael's. After it dries and sets for a couple days you can throw a coating of clear polyeurathane or clear paint over it. I usually use satin sheen it looks more natural.

One of these days I need to post one of my shields on the space provided. Too bad you don't live closer, I would be more than glad to do it for you.

I found imagines of scrolls and copied them on to projector paper, and did the same with a gothic alphabet. Then just had to make sure the letters were straight and drew and painted them on. I'm done it for several banner/shields now that I think of it...

" Hey Murdock, Are you putting the motto around the edge on the front?"

Yeah

It's from Dueteronomy, it's about killing your enemies and getting revenge and stuff. IN latin of course.

Bout and inch and a half

Oh and i'm done. I even did a real medieval device that looks like my White Surcoat from COTT 2. For my new tiny heater, Stapelton Arms. Might nmotto it might non.

Gotta let em dry and strap the heater and thats it.

Even embossed "For God, king and country" on what will be the guige.

Well

After tring spay eopxy coat....

tool dip

sharpie

spray paint

i did what i should have done

Got a friggin brsh and had mixed up some milk paint and painted it all by hand.

Some of the sharpie is still visisble and the enamel underneth cracked in a couple places but it looks alot better.

I also stripped the tool dip off the edge and just hand lettered the motto where i cut the stencil with a s fine tip sharpie

Thing that hooks my camera to the computer is still out.
