I've made, and sold some helmets in the past, all geared for SCA combat. These were sold either through e-bay, or here on the archive.

Rarely have I ever gotten any feed back on them other than "Ups dropped it off this morning". For my own benefit I'd like to hear what I did right, and what I did wrong. If you bought one of these from me or know someone who did, can you sound off?

I like the close helm best, and can make the most useful comments regarding it.

I think you did a fine job from the pattern from the one pic I can see. That said, the area of the helmet needing improvement (and to the pattern), is toward the rear base of the skull. It needs to curve more rather than coming down straight

Thanks Chef, I've looked at that same picture several dozen times and always thought "something's wrong" but never really caught it. Now I know.

I dig the burgonet - nice job on the faceplate, and burgonet's seem to be one of the toughest styles to "do" for SCA combat. Do you have a picture showing the helmet from the front? One recommendation - make a small comb, rather than just a crested ridge. Yeah, a comb'll chew rattan, but rattan is expendible - good helmets are forever!

Ditto what Hal said, I'm getting tired of the "ridges chew my rattan" crap.

RIVETS ON SPANGENS chew rattan, and you'll hit one with most every shot to a riveted early helm.
You have to work to hit a crest......
(Think about shot placement for a second and you'll realize what I mean.)

And which type of hat do you see most on the field, late period helms with crests, or early helms with tons of rivets?

I don't cry about it, I wish the whiners would do the same.
