Who out there makes these? Any more like this one out there somewhere?

Somehow the 'buy-it-now' seems a wee high, or is that just me? What should one expect to pay for something like this new, with or without a similar liner?

Persona-wise, who might sport such a thing (place, time, culture?)?

Gotta get my mind off the STS-107 (was also at home to watch every gawdawful tragic second from start to finish of STS-51-L with my oldest two, who were but tots in 1986, so today's going a bit tough) -- so I'm out surfing piccies of cool armour and such, and spotted this auction.

It seems a more than a bit high to me. It's hard to see any detail on it, but I'm guessing it's got a welded seam on the top. I can't realy see anyone raising a peice like that out of a single peice. Most of the similar type helms have the tops riveted on as I recall. It's not at all complex enough in my mind to justify a price that high.

eew, yeah, that looks pretty simple to make. Talk to an armorer that does custom work. After gothic freaks like me get done with them, they'll probably hug you to get the commission.

I'm not into the earlier stuff, so I can't tell you about the authenticity of this piece, but something doesn't feel, y'know, right about it to me.

Like even Captain Tuetonic would have a little nasal or something. (But that's just a gut feeling, don't go on what I say.)

Also definately, DEFINATELY not an SCA-piece. We frown on little things like exposing your whole face, neck, and back of head.

I actually like the thing itself -- for LH Crusader-era historical reenactment work. That's where its real customer base would be -- Second Crusade reenactors.

Just bid low, maybe you'll get it?

I tried bidding on that same item the last time it was up for auction but the reserve price was too high. I've seen similar ones ones for $150. Not sure if that includes the padding. I saw one with a pointy top online for only $50. Can't remember where, but I'm pretty sure they were imports.

They were worn under great helms for added protection around the 13th Century. It made it nearly impossible for someone to hack into your noggin.

Ach, no Raibeart, I didn't mean I was actually interested in bidding on the eBay thingie, just wondered if there was any armourers hereabouts producing a CORRECT version of it (since I've never seen one online with any SCA-type armourers), not only for LH/reenactor use but for off-field SCA wear too.

Looking to go earlier than mid-late 14th C myself, or have an earlier second fighting persona than the one I've been doing.

That doesn't look much like armour...to me it looks more like some kind of Coffee Maker

If you were to buy one what gauge steel would you want?

Would you mind 2 piece construction look? ie. top folded over the part that goes around the head (no rivits) as seen on many greathelms probably were forge welded.

The 2 piece look I could do for about $50 and the single piece look for about $75 without the liner.
