Well Azommin, he's not a Master (SCA) quite yet, but he is very good and is more than willing to help instruct people that want to spend the time to learn.

Xtracted, Darivs is an Archive member.

Did you read his article on Scutum construction? 1/4" laminated plywood shields with 20 gauge mixing bowl bosses. I am completely shocked that he is able to get any use out of such lightly-constructed gear.

oh that cuirass is yum yum yum. It has an adequate number of fleur-de-lys in it!

snif. I thought my cuirass was pretty before. snif. Now I have cuirass-envy!

Standing applause for that pretty armor!

I had the opportunity to spend some time at his place. I took many close-up and inside shot pictures. If you are interested in seeing them they are here:

if that doesn't work then here:

Very cool stuff!

The Scutii work fine. I am using one that has survived two Pennsics and an Armourgeddon (not to mention a couple of smaller events). It is about half the weight of the war shield I used previously and actually has more coverage.

I don't know if Darius updated his web site, but the newest incarnation of the shield has raw hide edging, which saves the weight of the hose and looks better to boot. I have to say that time spent working with him is definately time well spent.

unfortunately my folks aint too keen on me going over to his house (as he is a stranger to them). so i'll have to wait just a little while to go work with him. but when i can, it'll deffinatley be cool. again i say this: if u think its cool in pictures, see it in real life! man its cool!
but i guess at 16 years old i dont need to jump headon into plate armouring anyways. i can live on maille and leather for a while. but when im 17/18....
ciao!

Gorgeous.
I especially like the accurate-looking Imperial Gallic helms.
Most SCA Roman helms I see are a bit idealized and simplified.

Hey Azo,

If your parents are concerned, just contact Darius (his real name is Kurt) and ask if it would be alright if they could meet him. He has had other Apprentice's that were minors, but I believe that their parents were familiar with what it was their kids were doing and the ones I knew had a background with using tools.

It really is never to early to learn, although people should be of an age to be able to use power tools. If you are 16, you are old enough to drive, so power tools shouldn't be an issue IMHO.

You also have to remember to finish what you start. If you leave it too long (more than a year usually), it becomes armoury property and is completed for gifting to the needy ;P.

Darius is a good guy and I can't see why any parent would have an issue with him teaching their son or daughter to armour (he is a parent himself for that matter). Anyway, that's my suggestion. Good luck and happy armouring.

I think I saw this guy at warriors and warlords VIII, I think he even did his primary authorization at the same event. The thing I remember most (if this is the same guy) is that he was very willing to talk and answer any and all questions about his armour and his work. My other impression was that his armour was the best stuff that I saw at the event, people were pawing at him before he even had a chance to get his helm off after he authorized.
