My son needs "gauntlets" for practice with a boken, to keep from getting his knuckles busted up. He mentioned metal, but is something better or more traditional? Can someone suggest a pattern or steer me toward a previous AA thread.

Kendo kote work OK, but your knuckles will still sting when hit. Japanese didn't wear much on their hands.

Ok, while you should always take things with a grain of salt, my oppinion is that of a instructor of kendo.

He's playing with boken in a contact manner?!?! Thats not only foolish, but dangerous, as boken are not designed for contact sparing. A boken is a three foot long, sword shaped piece of oak, and has long been used by duelists as a deadly weapon. Boken are for strictly used for kata only, and using them for sparring not only can cause broken bones, but if broken, can cause horrible splinters and cuts.

Sorry to fly off the hinge like that. If you are talking about shinai, then thats a different story. Shinai are a simulated sword used in Kendo and Kum-do, constructed of four pieces of waxed, flexing bamboo. If this is the case I must strongly advise against hard plastics or metals, as this will cause the bamboo to splinter, which personaly and frankly, sucks more than any wood or metal splinter ever can.

Kote are expensive, and only stop the brunt of the force. I suggest Modern hockey or lacross gloves, and possibly a three-weapon fencing mask.

Wimp. That's what kenjutsuka *used* to practice with in the the Good Old Days.

Ya, ya, but we're (i'm assuming) are talking about a minor here. As my dad used to say "Don't get crippled till your out of my house"

Thanks for the tips. He is studying Shiitsu style, which I believe is more flash than impact. It involves more sword handling than the striking aspect. The gloves are mostly to protect the hands from stray shots. Not a minor involved so he is on his own.

If you want only the kote, you can have those separately, but I would like to see all of it go to a good home. You can have it for the cost of shipping.
I take a large size in a men's glove. My head size, if I remember correctly is a 24 and I purchased this when my chest size was a 44.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't Shiitsu a breed of small lap dogs? Im not familiar with the school/style.

Just using my knowledge of Romaji spelling for the style as my son pronounces it. I think it is a form of Eishin Ryu Iaido from what i have been reading.

I know a couple of Shiitsus with nasty enough tempers that I wouldn't want them to bite

Well, if he is using boken, I would strongly suggest hocky or lacross gloves still. You still don't want splintering.

This gear is already spoken for, the only thing I have left is a shinai, which I think would be difficult to ship.
