Probably better off posting this over in the classifieds.
You could try
Mad Matt
Otto's armoury
Iron Monger
Ashcroft baker
None of these will be Roman but they will get you going. If you save up to about $400 you could start looking at stuff from Sir Brand at West coast armoury or possibly Icefalcon.
You could also see what you could pick up second hand in the classifieds section.
Good Luck.

Hey Marcus,
I'm in Albuquerque. There's some, but not a whole lot of loaner gear around. There's more at the College.
Sir Raymond is generally at fighter practice on Sundays and has some cheap starter helmets -- most likely not Roman, but well within your budget and you can try them on. There's also a couple of armourers who may be willing to help you make stuff, either in leather or steel.
Will you make the Sunday practice?

I highly doubt that you will find a new Roman helmet for that price, and if you did, I would question its quality. You may get very lucky, and buy someone's used helmet, but you would be still lucky to get it for 200 dollars.
You may be best served by buying a "SCA period" helmet, making sure this is really the sport for you, and then buying something that you can be proud to wear for a long time.

Try Sir Sven's Armoury
http://www.greenbriarstudio.com/Armour/ ... fantry.htm
He lists a 1st cent. Roman helm for 260 but you will want the 14 gauge option. (Frankly you want 12 gauge but 14 will pass if you do not mind hammering out dents ever once and a while.)

If you go with Sir Sven, let me know if you hear from him. I havent been able to get thru to him via email, and he only has a fax # listed

I've got a used "roman" helm that I have out as a loaner.
for 150 bucks, plus shipping, I could get a basic loaner helm that would work just fine in it's place. Or, if you can get a used, legal bucket that you could swap, that would work too.
But it will take me a few days to track everything down.
here's a pic.

It's a good helm, and I think that the group that has it as loaner isn't using it. That has bothered me for a while, and now you are offering me a way to fix it. I'm really absent minded. If you don't PM me, I will forget.
I can't get at it right now to measure it. It might not fit you. some of my loaners are "odd sized".
