Gold/bronze finish

Post by Charles Alexander »

I've been told when you heat blacken steel it turns an assortment of colors first. I've seen limited examples of goldish bronze. Is this color possible to obtain through heating the metal? Would anyone have any examples?

That is a very tough color to get by heating.
Perhaps with a very carefully controlled heat source.

The dark blue is easy but the temperature range for straw color is a very narrow band.

You might look into some acid patinas out there.

Best of luck, if you find out how please let us know.

You could always try gilding or plating if you really want that gold effect.

There is an old chemical treatment you can use, when I find my copy I'll post it here for you.

Using heat on its own is very hit and miss due to the very narrow temperature band that the straw colour appears at.
