New toy from Patrick - Yet another armourer review

This is my second sallet from Patrick Thaden, and I have to say he came through yet again. This helm is a work of art. It fits perfectly with the right amount of padding that I asked him to allow room for. He built this helm from 3 very small pics that I sent him, and it is just like it in nearly every detail (except that it's blued). If you are looking for a helm that is historically accurate for a good price, and not a wait of 5 years, definately drop him a line. Next up, hopefully, is a Maximillian cuirass and if it turns out even half as nice as the sallet, I will be very happy.

Here is a picture. It really does not do the helmet justice. The pic made the blueing look almost black, but it is actually dark blue and purple:

Thats sweet! I've always liked the bellows visor, Looks like he did a great job with it. The blueing adds a nice touch. Could you post a pic from the side with the visor down?...Otto

Looks great, I got mine finished from Patrick last weekend and I love it now. He made some modifications on the widening the visor slot and rounding the corners on the bevor to make it more SCA friendly so I will be able to try it out this weekend at Steppes XXX and hopefully get PICS on after that

Nice job on that hat!
If I may nitpick just a tiny bit....
(Forgive me, the original that's based on is one my favorite helms in the world!...)
Needs more "sweep" where the head meets the neck in the back, it's too flat, in my eyes at least.
I did an italian sallet copy, and that's where *I* should have taken a bit more time, so don't think I'm being high-horsed!
(grin)
Still, I'd have no problems with wearing it!
That blued finish is evil!
I'd like to see that hat with a blued almain rivet harness....man, would that be sweet....

There are a couple surviving I believe, I don't recall where all they are, but the most commonly seen pieceis in the wallace collection. Another strange one is in brescia, and there is atleast one other complete one, not sure where right now. there are also a number of visors that that have survived. As far as the blueing, I just used a tradional heat blueing, clean the piece and heat it to about 525 deg F. and oil when it is cool enough not to burn the oil. Patrick

Very nice job. I was lucky enough to meet Patrick and see a display of his work this past weekend at Steppes Warlord (or would that be Waterlord, hope your stuff didn't get washed away) and I must say everything out there was very nice.
Patrick, not sure if you remember, I was the big guy talking to you about a 13C sugar loaf with moveable visor that I'm interested in commissioning. I grabbed one of your cards and will be in touch as soon as I find out how much it's going to cost to get my back fixed.
