Welcome and well come to the Archive, Michael_r. May your stay with us be long and profit you much.
You've got a good eye for the century's style. Are you SCA or in WMA?

Ah, well, the Society for Creative Anachronism, Incorporated, is more of an American group, though there is now a European SCA Kingdom, the Kingdom of Drachenwald. There may even be Creative Anachronists near you.
WMA is Western Martial Arts, also known as medieval martial arts -- the study of the manuals of swordplay and grappling and wrestling, armored and unarmored, from German and Italian sources mostly, which have recently become available in translation to English.
All the medieval-reenactment players and groups have their own requirements for their equipment. Rebated-steel-weapon groups are likely to insert perforated metal in their eyeslits for maximum safety, and to strike only slowly and with careful control, while rattan-stick fighters like the SCA strike at full speed and power with a less dangerous implement, and don't need perforated metal in their sights, indeed very often resorting to bargrill visors for excellent seeing and breathing.
I am very impressed with the quality of your English.

I never got the hinged thumb thing, do the thumbs lock in any way? Don't they get in the way when fighting?

about the hinged thumb thing, it allows for the natural movement of the hand and thumb, no problem.
