So, I have a nice, Ukrainian-made bascinet that I want to wear for rattan combat, once I finish a few modifications to it. Most of them I know how to do, which is good because they're the more urgent ones. The less urgent, but more mysterious modification I want to execute is to find a way to secure the visor (as required by Society heavy combat rules) with something other than a leather strap around the helm. My first thought was to use sneck hooks, which are easy enough to acquire from a few armorers, but I remember that Klaus the Red was not able to make this work. So, does anyone have any other suggestions? Has anything else produced a satisfactory, legal solution?

Brow mounted spring pins work great for side pivots but I've yet to see one work satisfactorily on klappvisor. The spring arrangement on Klaus' site is for removing the visor and hinge assembly so that it may be changed out to a bar grill not for keeping the visor closed during combat.

For klappvisors sneck hooks seem the best option if you do not wish to use a strap.

D' did you install the spring catch on your friend bascinet?

I have it all prepped and ready to go.

All the screen in in the breaths and eyeslot and it got the thumbs up from the Jousting marshal.

I have to get the helmet back from Kiena first.

Some helmet could be modificated by attaching the spring pin on the one of the visor side`s. Just like that but for the basinet.

It looks essentially like this:



This is not my helm, but a similar one that someone posted in the Armour of the Month forum. Mine doesn't have an aventail yet, but the rest of the helm is the same shape and proportion.

Nevertheless I have two ideas for you. I will speak with my teacher and give you answer on Monday.

So as I can see there are no any fresh ideas.
A couple ideas suggested itself to me.

Here is the first. It is Very simple. You can attach visor to aventail with leather lace. It is not very rigid, nevertheless it won`t open in fight.

The second one is that you can use leather loop as a fixation (hold). The alteration will take place only in attaching one or two rivets and small leather stripes (loop). You can attach them to one side or to both sides.
At the photo you can see the leather loop and construction of it.

IIRC Klappvisors are designed to hook from the bottom of the visor to a D ring on the maille shirt or ventaille.

Well, that would be a use for the little curlicue on the bottom. But where's the historical evidence? Are there examples in period art?

Sneck hooks, while positive, aren't period for the helmet, showing up a century later if not more.
