paint, cold chemical blueing, bake in oven, russet finish and then oil, heat and then douse in the oldest motor oil you can find (dangerous)...

THe sheet of 16 gauge steel I bought had a black finish on it, some sort of rust inhibitor (which doesn't work, BTW). I made a pair of elbows for a friend who has black steel legs, and I found that if I used a wooden dishing stump and a wooden hammer, it took much longer to dish the elbows but I was able to preserve this finish on the metal without marring it.

Use a torch. Hold the metal at the tip of the inner blue cone, and move it around when you see it start to turn colors. No need to make it red, just let it turn black/blue. Just make sure you don't have any leather attached to it.

go to your local wal mart and snag a bottle of gun bluing.

Make sure your piece is -absolutely clean- (slightest bit of oil or anything on the surface of the metal will screw you up) apply the bluing as evenly as possible (I usually use a little spray bottle to avoid brush marks) Apply until the color is where you want it, rinse excess from the piece. dunk in oil to stabilize.

here is a helm i blackened, the helmet was heated in a kiln then removed and dipped into waste motor oil. It makes for a realy cool tortise shell look.

That looks NICE! Is it an option to get that done when ordering a helm from you?
Once you are back in full form, that is.

Geeze Adam,

You would have to go and post something as cool as that helm that I have been drooling over for years now. Just when I thought I would be able to go through life not having one of my own. And then you go and post that picture.

Boil in strong tea for about 20 minutes, you may need a big pot or barrel to do it in. tannic acid etches the steel and it wont rust. You will get a nice grey/black finish.
