Etched Besegew for Barony of Ponte Alto

Post by waveicle »

This Besegew is a gift to Baron Jurgen of Ponte Alto Barony, Atlantia. He requested a gift that he could bestow for tournament. I used 16g stainless steel with brass laten. The rear is covered with thin suede to cut down on ringing. Pointing is cordovan latigo.

The laten is salt water etched with the Barony’s castle bridge, the Atlantian seahorses and the Latin virtues (roughly):

Gravitas : quality of substance or depth of personality

Dignitas : worthiness, etc.

Pietas : devotion

Victor : Champion

Ponte Alto: the Barony …

Next time I hope to better match the laten edge lines and be etch more deeply. I was short on time again. Also I would broaden the center conical shape now that I look at it.

Chao,

You're showing an artistic eye, waveicle. I agree; the next one can stand a deeper point. Don't the historical examples show a continuous curvature from circumference inwards to the point -- the whole thing has some 3D to it?

Konst -

I didn't base this on anything but images in my head. But yeah, the historical examples I remember are more spiked.

I used a 3/8" blunt center punch hit hard while the besegew was hot. This was done over a metal plate that I have cut a 2 inch hole in. I don't have a good technique for raising a spike on a piece. I hit pretty hard a few times and didn't move much so I didn't try to force it.

The whole thing was lightly dished first though, maybe it needed more. Dunno.
