Found Some Balls

Post by jamesn_13 »

http://www.brindley-steel-forging.co.uk/shop/Mild_Steel_Balls2548.htm They seem to be the right size for armouring, although the company is in Britain.

This one looks to be in the US:

You know, I always thought that a big steel ball welded onto an old hammer head would make a great dishing tool.
Would be nice to find a source in N america...

I personally like them! I had a buddy of mine weld these old ball bearings onto the hammer heads.

ToolGoon could you tell me how are they doing ?
I wanted do make my self some hammers like that but i guest that the weld will not hold when i will strike ( with a graet force) a 2mm and a 2,5mm mild sheet.
Or was i wrong? Will a good weld hold up this much striking force? how thick metal do you pound with these ToolGoon ?

Well Gocin, I haven't used them too too much yet. I dished a pair of spaulders with them (16 gauge) and they held up just fine. As long as you get good penetration on your weld, why would you think they wouldn't hold up? They key to getting something like this to work is good welding penetration, because the bearing is thick and the hammer is thick. The guy that did these for me said "I welded the hell out of them".

grind the surface of each first often there is a finish on the hammer that can cause poor weld penitration. use either 7018 utp 1/8 with a 3/32 root pass of 6010 or use 308 stainless.
any othere 7018 rod would probibly work just as well but I find that the utp varity cleasn up easyer
