Gambeson Construction

Post by jamesn_13 »

After finishing my pattern based on this picture: http://home.armourarchive.org/members/jamesn13/Gambeson.jpg
I have lots of 1/8 cotton batting and was wondering how much I should put in each area. I was thinking 3 layers for the body & neck, 2 for the arms, and 5 on the out of the elbow.

I just had one made using two layers. Sandwhiched between a layer of canvas and a layer of linen. It seems to be plenty. The good news is that cotton, even in two layers is much more comfortable. The down side is that it is still pretty warm, no matter how you cut it.

I suggest not padding the arms but instead use 3 or 4 layers of cloth. Padding the arms will make them a bit bulky and hard to move in.

Good idea, I'm just trying to pad the elbows sufficiently in a period manner so that I don't have to use any blue foam.

Stuff it under the elbow then but if you stuff the top you won't be able to flex your arm well.
