1330's Knight Gaston's sugarloaf & harness progress pict

Post by Chris Gilman »

Finally completed.
Here is that sugarloaf I started last year.
It's 16ga. 1050 spring steel and the gold decorations are repoussed copper. It is made to go over my basicnet cap. (at the bottom)
I still have the crest to build.

Absolutely stunning!

You aren't going to fight in that though are you? If so I would make another bigger helm to go over the whole thing to protect such a work of art. =P

All kidding aside it is truly beautiful.

That is truely amazing repousse work. It is a nice helm but the coolness is in the details.

Eamonn, you know I had to show up sooner or later. I love the 'Loaf! So regal looking, yet the intimidation factor just went up a notch. Way to raise the bar!

That is a nice sugarloaf, but I'm in love with that bascinet cap, it just looks so regal.

So jealous.

Edit: That repousse work is amazing.

Thanks guys. Here you go... (you can just see a bit of the bascinet cap.)
I still have to tailor and line the mail, and attach it to the cap. I was going to leave it a coif, but this does not seem to be practical.

Amazing....

It looked better in my head....

Stunning. A beautiful combination.

Seeing as how you made it from spring steel, do you have any intention of actually using it in combat of one form or another? If so, is the hollow behind the brass backed with anything to prevent flattening and deformation? I'd been considering doing something similar and was thinking of backing the brass with bondo to preserve the volume.

Just .... wow.
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. -Aristotle

Absolutely beautiful! Are you working the copper into a pitch pot/block? Have you designed some special tooling? I'd love to see progress pics of the repousse work.

Thanks for sharing. It is inspiring.

Just returned from Estrella war. Thanks for the compliments.

Jason,
I had it electroplated, boiling mercury is a bit beyond what I'm willing to do for art, but...

Talbot,
Yes, copper is set into a pitch tray I made for these pieces. I do have some progress picture, I have to find them.

Mattmaus,
I try not to half-assed, I'm full time time these days, althought I'm trying to be nicer.

lorenzo2,
The effigy is from Stothard, The is no name associeated with it.
Can be seen here in the background:

Baron Alcyoneus,
No amouring secrets, just do it, Observe what was right and what wrong, do it again.

Sean,
I am planning on fighting in this helm, the copper work is filled (more or less) with pewter/ solder.

James B.,
Yes, I plan on being at Pennsic, and plan on having the rest of this harness completed.

Enrico,
Yes that is my head cast, makes it handy to make armour for yourself when you can put your head on a bench and look at it from a distance.

You suck.

My interogation technique was weak, more 'intensive' methods are needed... ;)
