Steve,
Gerhard is correct; I have stitched in a "rand" or "welt" in between the upper and the sole. In early shoes the rand was a narrow strip of leather sewn between the upper and the sole to "fill" the seam therefore helping seal the seam. Later shoes had a wider piece in this placement that is called a welt, this was used to sew on an additional sole layer onto the bottom of the shoe (look at cowboy boots or most work boots.)
I used this wider strip to give me a place to attach the mail. Because I knew this was going to get a lot of wear and I didn’t want to have to fix it, I used Kevlar thread here.
It was my thinking that dirt and mud would pack into the mail at this attachment point, so I chose to sew this strip to the outside of the mail. Thinking the welt would keep the mail further away from the ground. However if I was to do this again, I might sew the mail to the outside instead since I am now concerned that dirt and mud will get packed into the space behind the welt. We will see how it works out.

OK now I get it. I did not know you were using a rand.

Does the cloth hosen extend down inside the boot?

No. They are padded hosen and are sewn to the top of the boot.

I take my hat off to you sir.

I'm fond of making elaborate costumes and garb, but my armor has always been plain and functional.

I see this as both inspiration and challenge to expand my own armouring horizons.

Interesting this thread came back up. I am contemplating doing nearly the same thing for my kit based on panzerhose:

http://willscommonplacebook.blogspot.co ... rhose.html

I was going to make footed hose and attach the maille to the hosen.

Thanks guys. Here you go... (you can just see a bit of the bascinet cap.)
I still have to tailor and line the mail, and attach it to the cap. I was going to leave it a coif, but this does not seem to be practical.

Whats the suspension inside this look like?

The helmet has a quilted suspension lining. I'll try to get a photo up soon.
Sorry for the further delay on this project, I have been distracted building real space stuff. One of the projects we just completed is a full scale mockup exterior and cockpit of the XCOR Lynx, a suborbital space plane (A vehicle I will get to fly to space in) It was for a Space Expo here in LA.

Also, we just completed designing and building crew trial spacesuits for Space X Dragon rider, the manned version of the spacecraft that is about to dock with ISS. I can't show you photos unfortunately, as they are still classified.

Yes, lucky for me Jeff Greason, XCOR's CEO is my size. This vehicle is 2 seat, so it's you and the pilot.

If you look closely at the photo, there is what appears to be a gold leaf covered embossed 14C styled decorative border under the conckpit canopy. Look really, really, close. I am sure I see it . . .

Very, very cool. Armour, space stuff, so its all just about shapes and materials.

Ok, the Sistine armour is finally underway again. I got the greaves remade and the sabatons finished and lat night sewed on the leather strips to hold the knees. Here are some initial test fit shots. I am not completely happy with the fit and I may re-tailor the mail. I also need to fit the sabatons to the greaves better and add straps. The greaves and sabatons are cut down as per examples from the early 14th C. But they still don't look right to me, I need to think on their shape a bit more.

I am finally happy with the gold leaf on the leather trim, so that is the next hurdle. Also adding the splints into the cuisses and getting everything heat treated. So now I’ll try to get the gauntlets finished and the body plates figured out, so I can heat treat everything at the same time.
(Please ignore my 14th C. Beach Boys braise)

So glad to see you working on this again. As usual I am sure the finished product will be spot on and well fitted. You continue to inspire us all good sir.

Those pants though... uhhhg

Please don't ever wear those on camera again LOL

The Greeves, are those split and welded or shaped from one piece? Just wondering :)
