Questions about hydraulics need help.

Post by Mad Matt »

Ok so I use a press that I built to rough shape shield bosses. I'd been using a 30 ton air hydraulic bottle jack which probably actually puts out 50 tons. the frame is plenty strong for 50.

Trouble is the jack kinda blew up. I want to replace it since I think I'll probably keep doing bosses. The jack I have now isn't available any more. I found a 50 ton jack online but with shipping it's a little over $500 CDN. I figure if I go with a 50 ton jack this one won't blow up on me.

Is there a cheaper way to do this? I don't know anything about hydraulics. I've got a big compressor it'll put out 130psi at 10cfm. Can I use that to run a hydraulic pump? And then how do I figure out what kind of cylinder I need to push 50 tons. What else do I need to put it together. And can I do it cheaper then the $500 (I can find that out myself princess auto has tons of hydraulic stuff).

I want something that will start at 10-11" and max out at 16" 18 at the most.

Cylinders all just say psi and have the diameter and length. I have no idea how this works out to overall pressure.

Kinda hoping this route will move faster then the jack too but that's not really that big of an issue.

edited because I think what you are talking about is an Air over Hydraulic press correct?

Area of piston X pressure applied = force in PSI
Subtract the rod area for the return force.

Ok I'm too dumb even for that halberds. What's return force? There's springs to pull the cylinder back up if it's not applying pressure.

A grocery list of what I need would be really really great.

Irish yeah that's what I mean I think. Here's a link to the 50 ton jack. The 30 ton one I had just barely put out enough pressure.

I have discovered that the local contractor rental supply place rents 50 ton bottle jacks but not sure if they're air powered hydraulic jacks or hand pump ones. I can press about 16 in an hour so renting one for a day here and there might work out.

Ok I found this it says it's for building a 50 ton press. Looks like it'll be cheaper to just buy the jack.

• For building a 50 ton press
• 6" bore, 10" stroke
• 2" shaft
• Base pineye width: 6-5/8", pinhole dia.: 1-1/4"
• 3,600 PSI max. continuous pressure

The Troy 50 ton air/hydraulic is probably your best bet.
