Gothic Mitten Gauntlets

I want to convert my fingered gauntlets into mitten gauntlets (tired of repairing leather finger strips every couple years, and of getting fingers smashed). I'm wondering, what would be the best way (or what way has or has not worked for people who have tried) to make the mitten parts over the hand, the ones that are sort of fluted to look like fingers..
I'm wondering if it would be better to shape each plate so it fits to the last one that was added; or if it would be better to make "normal" smooth mitten-finger plates, assemble with bolts, then do the fluting. for the later method I was thinking I'd apply a lot of duct tape to keep the plates from moving a lot, but having them assembled would help get them to the right shape easier.
any best way to do articulations with these kinds of shapes?
