um no. wool is what it should be made out of. use wool as the outer part and linen as the inner part. will keep you complete dry in a rain storm.

Since we don't have any surviving examples, opinions vary. It's my opinion that the garment ought have two layers (double layer -i.e. doublet). I think there ought just be a wool outer layer and a linen liner.

Beets make red, I think. It would take a very concentrated solution.

Beets wash out very quickly. You can't make it stay. I think they used lots of layers of linen to pad the dublet. Here is a good site for peroid dyes.

Ok, you are talking about an arming doublet, that is a completly different animal.

You probably want 3 or 4 layers of heavy linen quilted together about every 2 inches.

If you can't find the color you want, linen is easy to dye. I cannot say what you would use to make it red since I am not a dye expert. But remember the doublet under that armor is a reproduction, not an original.

It should look something like this:
http://www.edricsrose.com/unusedpics/doublets/dscn0311.jpg

The arms should fit tighter and there should be lacing points at the front like the ones on the sides to point your legs to.

The material should also be hand quilted instead of machine quilted.
