Best type of stainless for...

Post by ArtemisGreen »

Sorry for not being about armour, but I think the guys here would know best what I need.
I was confronted by a friend in my shop class about a gas tank. He knew that I make armour and all, so he figured I'd be the best for the job. So my question is - what kind of stainless is the best for a gas tank? I need it to be really corrosion resistant, but not so extravagantly expensive that he won't pay for it! I already have a welder that says he can tig weld it for me, I just need to do the shaping.
Any idea, or do I need to go somewhere else?

I think any of the 3xx series stainless steels woul;d have adequate corrosion resistance for a gas tank but 304 would probably be ideal since it's designed to be less to exhibiy less corrosion in weld areas than 302.

Thanks for the info!
He's putting it in a go-kart, but he wants it to look like a motorcycle tank. It sits above the driver's head, which for the life of me i cant understand why anyone would want that. One little hole and he's covered in gas. The current gas tank does have a hole in it on the top, so when he hits a bump, it spills all over him. I guess he's planning on me making this one sealed with a fuel pump on it or something... Not that it's out of my league, just that he's asking for it to be cheap! Probably not going to happen!

I beleave it will still need to be sealed once your done fabricating it with an epoxy resin.
try and talk some cents in to your fiend.
you can be creative but mounting it over the drive area is just bad karma.
