Early 12th C Spanish Knight

Post by Godric of Castlemont »

Looking for information on building a kit based on the armies of Queen Urraca from 1100-1126. What would the professional soldier wear both infantry and cavalry.

Godric,

A quick google search finds her as the of Queen of León, Castile, and Galicia. So you're asking about northwestern Spain and northern Portugal, I believe, yes?

Godric,

You will want to track down Ada Bruhn de Hoffmeyer's _Arms and Armor In Spain: A Short Survey_ vol. 1.

The answer appears to be mail with a conical or round top helm (with or without a nasal). There is some evidence of some forward pointed helms like the one you wear as well. There is also a sculpture in Navarre of a conical helm with a large ocular/early face plate from later in the century. Shields are typically small round shields and small kites (similar to the ones becoming popular in the West).

You might start with looking at the Osprey Man-at-Arms title El Cid and the Reconquista 1050-1492. However, Nicolle relies heavily on the work of de Hoffmeyer for the time period you are looking for.

I hope you or Rosie have read this:

I hope this helps

I am actually asking on behalf of Rosie, now that our son is born we want to redesign her armor and she has always wanted to be early 12th cent. Spanish. I'll have to see if I can track down a copy of that book.

The stylized fleurs on the first horseman's helmet have some interesting comparisons in later Moorish helmets, like the Moor's on the far-right in this panel from late 13th. century MS T.I.1, Cantiga T187.
