Red Scarf Rebel (1351-1368)

Post by Liu Kuaici »

IWTB a Han Red Scarf Rebel. (Rebel movement in 1351-1368 to overthrow the Mongol/Yuan dynasty in China)

I have soft kit taken care of except I'm having trouble finding patterns for the common style headwear, scarf, turban...things, called Jin. All I really know is they're not just a square of cloth.

For SCA armoured I'm going primarily with hidden blue-barrel until I can gather funds to put together some lamellar. I could use some help deciding on a helm that suits the persona though.

A few images of the soft kit. Two different tops here of the same pattern, I omitted the cuffs on my fighting top.

Pattern was created from images and instructions by Hu Jingming, found at
http://torguqin.wordpress.com/2010/07/1 ... shuhe-pt1/ and http://torguqin.wordpress.com/2010/08/0 ... shuhe-pt2/

What little historical details I have aside from "They're the guys that kicked out the Mongols." (short version) I can so far only find wiki articles with a couple names and dates. I'm pretty far from a decent library (live in the sticks down here) and haven't gotten the time to really dig in to hardcopies yet.

I'll be happy to link what I've got if it's deemed acceptable, though.

your hard kit would likely be a variation of brigandine, and actually your soft kit could look exactly the same since the yuan and ming courts both had court officials wearing fake armor as a display of fancy clothes. I would look at early ming armor for a basis, which by the way looks alot like sung and yuan armor.

Early Ming/Late Yuan, within the margin of error for "when the hell did this happen" since some experts can't even agree on the ousting of the last Mongol Emperor as the end of the Yuan in the first place...

If not brigandine, possibly a COP disguised as a riveted gambeson with the awesome huge tassets. I've gotten a lead on a helm from Ashcroft-Baker that suits the conical/onion look that seems to be common in art of the period. A little brass or bronze embellishment and it could be downright sexy.

Hello, I have also been working on an early Ming persona so that I can eventually fight heavy rapier/cut and thrust in the sca using what I know of chinese jian fighting. I found this website awhile back. It is just pictures of people wearing Hanfu, but it is a good source for Ideas, and the pictures are added to constantly. I believe I have seen several different styles of headwear on the men in the pictures. It is my understanding however, that some styles of hat are only appropriate for certain classes of people such as court officials, of course ymmv.

Unless you are getting the Ashcraft Helm from a secondary source, DON"T ORDER IT!!
Their quality of helms has been horrendous of late, with some helms failing SCA specs fresh out of the box, not to mention their awful customer service. I would advise looking up Hjalmr here on the archive or finding a simple conical helm in the classifieds section and just sprucing it up.

Roj that Swete, thanks. I've looked at Hjalmr's work before and I like what I've seen.

I'm running into some of the same snags myself when it comes to headwear. Most of the rebel movements seem to be known by their scarves/turbans but I cant find any info on exactly what they were.
Heres a link to a forum (mostly dead) where you can find some useful stuff occasionally.

I'm working towards a Song persona myself.
