Hello all I'm looking for any information on the Mauryan Empire in India. Preferably the time of Ashoka the Great 304-232 BCE. The Mauryan Empire is the first empire to unite India for the first time.
From what I've gathered through random web surfing there were 7 main classes philosophers, farmers, soldiers, herdsman, artisans, magistrates, and councilors. Id like to be a soldier/magistrate for the Mauryan Empire. I have found a few pictures showing the ancient Indian clothing such as Kachcha, Antariya, and Uttariya. I'd like to be a noble of some sort (haven't figured out how I'm going to mold that with my persona yet) that is a high ranking officer from the Kalinga war 262-261 BCE. Ashoka after witnessing the bloodshed of this great war consults with a Buddhist monk and converts to Buddism. I want to be around that time period. A time of peace and prosperity follows the Kalinga war. I want to be an Indian that welcomes the Buddhist Ideology of peace but continues to stick with his Hindu beliefs and is not afraid to put his old war armor on to fight for his empire.
thank you

- found sources claiming that they used shields like this along with med. sized round Indian shields. Can someone confirm for me?

I have no Idea about Mauryan India, but looking at the shield you posted, the strapping looks erroneous.
Compare the front (where you have a number of what look like rivets in the top right of the picture, and the two nominal handles on the back, which look like they are badly drawn.
Where did you get the image from?

The picture actually is a vague video game drawing. The only picture I could find that would fit. If anyone's interested I've found great forum on the military of India http://historum.com/asian-history/40710 ... india.html
