Do you mean the Sword Brothers? Also look for the Knights of (and forvige the butchered spelling) Drobyzin.

Bear in mind that the Brotherhood of the Sword was absorbed by the Order of theTeutonic Knights. This was done for a number of reasons, but mostly to coordinate efforts, give legitimacy to the presence of the Knights, and to provide an in-road for change within the charter of the Order.

Many of the Brotherhood dropped out because they did not agree with the idea of signing over their birthright as a condition of membership, others because they could not prove noble lineage, others because they didn't believe in turning over the lion share of the spoils of conquest to the Order, hoping that some of it would trickle back down into their own purses. Still, though, many stayed.

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the AA and SCA, and this seems to be the best thread to submit my WTB. I am looking into being a Danish knight circa 1240s and since some of the participated in the Baltic Crusades, and quarreled with the Sword Brethren over Estonia, this seemed like the best place to look.

I have a few resources I'm looking through, but I had questions on heraldry for the time as well as armor. Since he would most likely be traveling all around the Baltic, how accurate would it be to mix a few armor styles together? Mainly I'm looking at swapping maille for lamellar or a COP? (want maille eventually, but cost is an issue for now) It seems a little early for COP for that part of the world, but whatever I can do to hide as much armor for SCA I can until I can make it authentic would be good.

I have all the Ospreys for this time/region including the Battle of Peipus, but any additional resources would be great!

Have you considered a simple quilted jack with hidden pockets for plastic or hard leather panels as an expedient to a proper COP?

One reason I suggest this, is you mention SCA. Please do realize that maile does not protect from bludgeoning blows coming at the body. It will dramatically slow a strike coming directly up toward the cup, but a crossing blow will land - hard. You will have to protect yourself from the armor at that point.

In Meridies it is common to wear a gambeson or jack that has plates of plastic, metal, or leather hidden in velcro-flapped pockets. This has other advantages, as well. The plates can be removed for cleaning or lighter armor (as skill advances), or more can be added for increased safety. Additionally, such a garment can be modeled to suit your sense of fashion.

That is a good idea. I've never worn maille in combat but figured I would need something to soften the blows. I will start with the jack and build up from there. Some folks in my barony said they would help me construct one. The COP of this pattern section looks like a good step up from the jack and could end up with over the maille once I get there.

Does anyone have any good resources on heraldry of the Baltic region in this time period? I know the Danish flag was around by then, but had personal heraldry taken off in that region yet, or was it still more of the old norman/viking styles of creatures/designs?

I am also interested in this era, though I'm focusing on the pagan side of the conflict. What kind of arms and armor did warriors from Estonia and Finland use to combat the crusaders? I'm looking at late 12th and early 13th century, no later than 1236 when the Sword Brothers were defeated. I have the chainmaille coming, I wear hidden legs, but I keep hearing about lamellar and am curious if that is accurate for this area.

I'm also looking for soft kit, such as tunics, are they knee length or longer? Are winnegas still worn at this time? What about footwear? Thanks for any information.

The 12th-century end of it, yeah. It would fade out whenever the Phrygian did elsewhere; the Germans kept up on armor fashion equipping noble young scions for the Baltic battles.
