Need help with 14thc period clothing

Post by LadyChatterly »

I am new to the SCA and would like to find period clothing to buy for specifically the 14th century (high medieval) time frame. I don't want to disrespect my group by purchasing something that is innapropriate. If anyone can direct me to a website and more specifically what to look for and what not to look for, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Try http://www.historicenterprises.com. I'm not sure when they're returning from Pennsic.

You've asked a really big question.

Where is your persona from? When in the 14th is she from?

Sideless surcotes, cotehardies, hoopelands, various types of gowns are all appropo depending on where, when, social class, marital status, etc.

http://www.revivalclothing.com/ is another place to shop for clothing but research will be your best friend.

You can find some lovely (and perfectly SCA-appropriate) 14th century clothing at Historic Enterprises or Revival Clothing.

If you'd like to make your own, see the links at http://moas.atlantia.sca.org/wsnlinks/i ... &catid=285 -- you might also want to see the photo galleries from 14th century living history organizations at http://moas.atlantia.sca.org/wsnlinks/i ... &catid=359 for some more ideas as well. (Some of those will have "clothing standards" pages, which can be interesting & informative.)

Here are some books I'd recommend looking at for information about (and construction of) 14th century clothing:

  • <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0896762394?ie=UTF8&tag=suggestion-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0896762394">Medieval Tailor's Assistant: Making Common Garments 1200-1500</a> has good and relatively clear instructions.
  • If you'd like to look at some nifty details of artifacts relating to 14th century clothing, see the Museum of London's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1843832399?ie=UTF8&tag=suggestion-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1843832399">Textiles and Clothing</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1843833514?ie=UTF8&tag=suggestion-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1843833514">Dress Accessories</a>; <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/8772889357?ie=UTF8&tag=suggestion-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=8772889357">Woven into the Earth: Textile finds in Norse Greenland (None)</a> has even more complete (or nearly-complete) garments, many of which resemble clothing from mainland Europe.

There are also patterns available, including Reconstructing History's patterns. (You could get the 14th century Lady Package and make a whole wardrobe for yourself.) :)

Hello Lady Chatterly!

Thanks for going to the effort to make nice clothes and equipment! You will make the SCA a better place for it!

My wife and I live in Huntsville and do 14th century also. Feel free to drop a line - I'm sure my wife would love to do a sewing weekend.

If you decide to make your own, look for linen or wool. Other fabrics may be appropriate depending upon your persona, but linen and wool will almost always be correct.

For inexpensive linen:

Remember, period fabrics are your friend. :-)
