So I am trying to put together a reasonable early/mid 14th Centuy Italian militiaman kit.

I have a bascinet, but, every picture I can find of a militiaman shows a shorter on the head helmet, with no aventail.
Which for our game just wont work.

So what I am wondering is, what kind of aventail could I get away with?
Mail or Padded?

You could trydoing a simulated coif by securing the aventail to the inside of the bascinet skirt, not the outside. Or put in a suspension liner and wear it over an actual mail coif and an actual padded arming cap.

Or bag the aventail look altogether and wear a mail standard with hidden rigid plates for your gorget.

BTW, try to look at as many contemporary Italian illuminations or sculptures as you can before you make your call about what was typical- much more reliable than an Osprey artist. I think you'll find that the early bascinet / cervelliere with aventail was not that uncommon.

I've been looking for some effigies or artwork that might help me, but havn't been able to come up with any.

The original interest was from an Italian fresco. But it also did not show any for of aventail on the helm. It showed very little mail whatsoever.
