8th century Avar drinking bowl

Post by Halbrust »

My metal working consists of two elbow cops and two knee cops...

I am now going to try and recreate this beautiful drinking bowl that is housed at the NY Met.

I will be making it out of a single piece of 16 guage mild steel for an A&S competition. I'm not sure if the original piece has the hanle attached to the bowl or if it is shaped from a single sheet.

I just decided on the piece, and will begin work on it this Sunday. I will post pictures and progress reports through the build and competition 7/17/10

It is listed as 6.5cm in height. I am figuring that puts the diameter of the bowl at about 16cm, plus an 8cm handle. If anyone has input regarding the deminsions please chime in.

With regards to the repousse, I'm going to play it by ear as I go. I'd like to decorate it in a similar fashion, but not having done any reppouse work I may have to settle for less ornate.

I would strongly suggest a thinner materiel.

20 gauge would be good for this. Even 24 gauge wouldn't be too terribly horrible.

Man. I went YEARS wishing I could get one of those for my living history kit... got fond memories of sitting on a carpet with cherries and jasmine tea as the sky went to evening.

I'll be sure to post pics as I go along.

I said 16 gauge because that's what I already have, but I may pick up some 20 guage for this.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who thought this bowl was gorgeous.
